Benthic storms: temporal variability in a deep-ocean nepheloid layer.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Time series measurements of light scattering were made for 2(1/2) months at 20 meters above the bottom in the western North Atlantic. The highest values recorded with the nephelometer exceeded all previous measurements worldwide. Rapid changes indicated a high degree of activity near the sea floor, and some increases may have been related to atmospheric storms.

متن کاملThe importance of subsurface nepheloid layers in transport and delivery of sediments to the eastern Cariaco Basin, Venezuela
Optical transmissometer measurements were coupled with particulate organic matter (POM) observations to understand suspended sediment composition and distribution in the eastern Cariaco Basin during the rainy seasons of September 2003 and 2006. Our results suggest that nepheloid layers originating at the mouth of small mountainous rivers discharging into the eastern Basin are a major delivery m...
متن کاملDetermining the Scattering Properties of Vertically-Structured Nepheloid Layers from the Fusion of Active and Passive Optical Sensors
The optical impacts of a scattering benthic boundary layer are fairly obvious to in situ and remote sensing techniques that measure ocean color. These scattering layers cause an increase in light reflectance from positions above the benthos, a reduction in the penetrating photons to the bottom, and a decrease in photons scattered from the bottom back toward the surface. The net result is that t...
متن کاملDistribution of macroaggregates and f ine - grained particles across a continental marg in and their potential role in f luxes
-The distribution and size of large marine aggregates (>0.5 mm) photographed in situ were compared with the small-particle distribution determined from beam attenuation (660 nm) in a section across the shelf and slope of the northern Gulf of Mexico. On the shelf changes in beam attenuation matched the trends in large particle concentration. Over the slope, beam attenuation profiles resembled th...
متن کاملHorizontal and Vertical Distributions of Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) in the NW Mediterranean Sea Are Linked to Chlorophyll a and O2 Variability
Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) are relevant in particle and carbon fluxes in the ocean, and have economic impact in the desalination industry affecting reverse osmosis membrane fouling. However, general models of their occurrence and dynamics are not yet possible because of the poorly known co-variations with other physical and biological variables. Here, we describe TEP distributions i...
